Public service responsibilities include: Fire fighting, rescue, fire investigation, hazardous materials emergencies, emergency medical services, fire prevention and inspection, public education, safety investigations, emergency services and disaster agency (civil defense). Programs include: cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR), paramedic program, blood pressure screenings, automatic external defibrillator program (AED), mutual aid pacts with neighboring communities, various safety programs for all age groups, facility tours, and equipment demonstrations. Speakers are available for civic and social organizations.
The Berwyn Fire Department has 66 fulltime personnel proudly serving the citizens of Berwyn. A group of 18 paramedics supplied by Paramedic Services of Illinois staff our 3 ambulances. There are 3 fire stations strategically located in the North Central and South sections of the city. Berwyn population is listed at 54,000 persons residing in an area of 3.5 square miles.

Mutual Aid
Berwyn is an active participant in a mutual aid group known as MABAS Division 11. Through the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System we and our partner communities share resources. This network provides organized response to incidents that might overwhelm a single community.
EMS / Rescue
Other than fire fighting operations the department is capable of responding to a variety of incidents. Emergency Medical Services is provided by our 3 ambulances All firefighters are trained in first response emergency medical care and each primary vehicle is AED equipped. Vehicle crashes requiring extrication of persons trapped or elevator rescues. Through our MABAS Division we have a Technical Rescue Team for specialized situations like collapsed structures. A team approach is also used for incidents involving Hazardous Materials.
Training
The ever expanding role of the fire department requires training and updating of skills. The Training Officer directs our personnel toward various goals in keeping with the mission of the Fire Department. Our personnel may avail themselves of the fire service related courses presented by various agencies in our area.
Fire Prevention
Taking a proactive approach the department also provides Fire Prevention through inspection and public education. Our Citizens Fire Academy gives residents the opportunity to experience fire department first hand.
